How Laneway coLabs works

Laneway coLabs is a community-led laneway revitalization program run by The Laneway Project. Each coLabs project brings neighbours together over a defined period of time to shape improvements that reflect local needs, priorities, and creativity.

The coLabs journey

Each Laneway coLabs project follows a shared arc, shaped by the people who live around the laneway.

Listening and visioning
Projects begin with conversations. Residents share how the laneway is used today, what feels challenging, and what they hope it could become. These early discussions help surface priorities, memories, and everyday realities.

Ideas take shape
Through workshops and informal discussions, ideas are explored and refined. Artists and facilitators help translate community priorities into creative possibilities that feel rooted in place.

Design making
A final design is developed, balancing community input, site conditions, and feasibility. The project then moves into making and installation, often with residents contributing hands-on.

Celebrate and carry forward
Every coLabs project ends with a community celebration. These moments mark the transformation and help set the stage for ongoing care, use, and stewardship.

What participants say

Across projects, participants consistently describe a stronger sense of connection, belonging, and shared responsibility.

“I know so many more neighbours now. This project surpassed my expectations.”

“Thank you for making the laneway an extension of our home.”

“The biggest change is the sense of togetherness and how much the community loves their neighbourhood and is willing to work together.”
